The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Hong Kong Community College West Kowloon Campus is a collaboration project with AD+RG Limited. The project answers the need for innovative learning clusters while maximizing the daylight penetrating into the intervening campus blocks. The design demonstrates a re-interpretation of high rise university campus.
The Campus encompasses two connected towers with prime state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities with “bridges and podium” interconnecting each of them. Sky deck gardens are strategically created every three storey on the bridges that offer students a dynamic learning semi-outdoor atmosphere for holistic development. The twin towers and the connecting structures are carefully positioned to maintain solidity and transparency. Teaching facilities with higher capacity such as lecture theatres, indoor sports hall, special classrooms are found on the lower floors not only because of the larger floor plates present there but because more interaction and communication can be promoted among the first-class teaching facilities. The facilities are shared and connected effectively with an escalator and lifts system. For sustainability and flexibility, the building design encourages an embracing of the natural environment and use of environmentally friendly materials. Innovative building technologies are used in the design with close collaboration with academics from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to achieve energy efficiency and a healthy learning community. The Community College exemplifies an environmental design in high and densely populated urban area in West Kowloon.
